Depression and Anxiety

Understanding Depression and Anxiety

Both depression and anxiety are considered mood disorders. They are usually lumped together when talking about them. They can definitely be separated but most of the time they go hand in hand with one another. I know in my case I say they play off one another and I have deal with both and have for most of my life.

Depression usually causes feelings of being hopeless, sad, upset about things in general, and noticeable decrease in energy. Anxiety is categorized as having feelings that are surrounded by worry, dread, nervousness, and an uneasy feeling. Depression is more than just having an off day or having a down or bad day. It lasts a lot longer than just a moment or a day and it can interfere with your everyday activities.

Symptoms of depression can range from feeling sad, not wanting to participate in normal actives that you usually enjoy, feeling irritable, restlessness, insomnia, or sleeping too much. Your appetite can change from eating more than normal or not eating at all. Depression can make you feel worthless, guilty, helpless, and/ or suicidal. Depression can be caused genetics, experiencing a traumatic event in your life, having major life changes, medical issues, actual medicine you take or the usage of drugs and alcohol. Anyone can get depression it does not discriminate.

Anxiety is an emotion that deals with worried thoughts, tension, changes within the body, and intrusive thoughts and concerns. People can avoid certain situations because of the worry they experience with anxiety. Physical symptoms can present themselves as well such as high blood pressure, trembling, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and sweating. Anxiety is a feeling of fear, uneasiness, and dread. There are different types of anxiety and you need to be seen by a professional to get a proper diagnosis.

I have been dealing with depression and anxiety for many years. I have been diagnosed with different variations of both conditions. I am currently on a few medications to help me deal with each disorder. These disorders often go together and usually where there is one there is the other. They are treated in a different manner but they are both helped by medication, therapy, and seeking out ways to calm them. When dealing with autoimmune diseases, it seems that both of these disorders present themselves because of what all a person has to deal with. If you are having intrusive thoughts, changes in your daily life, anything along those lines please see a professional and get the help you need.
